Hopton Wood Limestone has been used extensively for hundreds of years in buildings of character and prestige such as the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, The Albert Memorial, Lichfield Cathedral, Calke Abbey to name a few and many, many local homes and buildings.
Known in the 19th century as Derbyshire 'Marble' due to its ability to take a very fine and highly polished finish such as a marble. These characteristics make it ideal for fine quality works such as fireplaces, hearths, floors, skirting, dado rails, architraves and intricate mouldings of all types as well as carving and letter cutting.
Hopton Wood Limestone is widely used for restoration projects throughout England on listed buildings, as well as new, this quality stone is equally at home in either a country cottage or the finest cathedral.
Here is a link telling the history of quarrying Hopton Wood Limestone, the Killer family mentioned here are relatives of ours, the Hopton Wood Stone story has come full circle back to desendants of the original quarrymen.
Loved by architects and designers together with craftsmen who work the stone, letter cutters, sculptors and masons.
Hopton Wood is of the 'strong and silent' type; it's subtle tones of light grey/buff make it quietly confident in its place as one of the world's great natural stones.
